I regularly share bite-sized spoken Finnish on Facebook and Threads. Each week, I’ll collect them here so you can catch up anytime.

1. Ikkunapesu

1️⃣ Hei! Sä tykkäät pestä ikkunoit.

Puhekieli

  • sä = sinä (you)
  • tykkäät = like
  • pestä = to wash
  • ikkunoit = ikkunoita (windows, partitive plural)

English

Hey! You like washing windows.

2️⃣ Sää tuut lauantain mul pesee ikkunat.

Puhekieli

  • sää = sinä (you)
  • tuut = tulet (come)
  • lauantain = lauantaina (on Saturday) (regional/dialect form)
  • mul = minulle / mun luo (to my place)
  • pesee = pesemään  (to wash / to clean) (spoken form)

English

You’re coming to my place on Saturday to clean the windows.

3️⃣ Mää vihaan ikkunanpesuu.

Puhekieli

  • mää = minä (I) (common in Southwest Finland)
  • vihaan = hate
  • ikkunanpesuu = ikkunanpesua (window washing)

English

I hate washing windows.

4️⃣ Sä tykkäät, sul ei oo ikkunoit.

Puhekieli

  • sä = sinä (you)
  • sul = sinulla (you have)
  • ei oo = ei ole (don’t have)
  • ikkunoit = ikkunoita (windows)

English

Of course you like it — you don’t even have any windows.

5️⃣ Nii, mä en vanhas paikas pessy 12 vuoteen ikkunoit.

Puhekieli

  • nii = niin (yeah / well)
  • mä = minä (I)
  • vanhas paikas = vanhassa paikassa (at my old place)
  • pessy = pessyt (washed)
  • 12 vuoteen = for 12 years
  • ikkunoit = ikkunoita (windows)

English

Yeah, I didn’t wash the windows at my old place for 12 years.

6️⃣ Hyvä! No sit on jo aika!

Puhekieli

  • sit = sitten (then)
  • on jo aika = it’s about time

English

Good! Well then, it’s about time!

2. Vinsu haluaa pullaa.

1️⃣ Kyttäät noit pullia.

Puhekieli

  • kyttäät = tuijotat / vahtaat (stare at, keep watching)
  • noit = noita (those)
  • pullia = sweet buns

English

You’re staring at those buns.

2️⃣ Vinsu.

Puhekieli

  • Vinsu = dog’s nickname/name
  • No actual puhekieli grammar here, just calling the dog by name.

English

Vinsu.

3️⃣ Mitä, himottaisko pieni pulla?

Puhekieli

  • mitä = what? / so?
  • himottaisko = himottaisiko (would you fancy / crave)
  • pieni pulla = a little bun

English

What is it? Fancy a little cinnamon bun?

4️⃣ No annetaan! – Ei!

Puhekieli

  • annetaan = let’s give (some)
  • ei = no

English

Let’s give him some!
— No!

5️⃣ Annetaan, syö koko koppa!

Puhekieli

  • annetaan = let’s give him some
  • syö = eats / will eat
  • koko = whole
  • koppa = basket

English

Give him some — he’ll eat the whole basket!

6️⃣ Syö kaikki! – Nii!

Puhekieli

  • syö kaikki = he’ll eat everything
  • nii = niin (yeah / exactly)

English

He’ll eat everything!
— Exactly!

7️⃣ Ota kahvit päälle.

Puhekieli

  • kahvit = coffee (Finnish often uses plural form)
  • päälle = on top of it / afterwards

English

Have some coffee with it too.

8️⃣ Kaffet päälle sitte ja hörppäset.

Puhekieli

  • kaffet = kahvit (coffee) (Swedish-influenced spoken Finnish)
  • sitte = sitten (then)
  • hörppäset = hörppäiset (take a sip)

English

Then have some coffee and take a nice sip.

9️⃣ Jätä kissalle vähä, Simballe.

Puhekieli

  • jätä = leave
  • kissalle = for the cat
  • vähä = vähän (a little)
  • Simballe = for Simba

English

Leave a little for the cat, for Simba.

🔟 Simballe jätä vähä pullaa ja kahvia kans.

Puhekieli

  • vähä = vähän (a little)
  • pullaa = bun
  • kahvia = coffee
  • kans = myös / kanssa (too, as well)

English

Leave Simba a little bun and some coffee too.

💡 Context joke

The women are jokingly treating the dog like a human coffee guest. The dog keeps staring at the pastries, so they start making up a whole fika plan for him:

“Give him a bun.”
“No!”
“He’ll eat the whole basket!”
“Then give him coffee too.”
“And don’t forget to leave some for the cat!”

Very Finnish grandma-style humor, especially around kahvi + pulla. 😆

3. Moi, 112!

1️⃣ Mitä te pojat teette jos tulee hätä?

Puhekieli

  • te = you (plural)
  • pojat = boys
  • teette = do
  • jos = if
  • tulee = comes / happens
  • hätä = an emergency

English
What do you boys do if there’s an emergency?

2️⃣ Ai mää?

Puhekieli

  • ai = oh?
  • mää = minä (I) (common in Southwest Finland)

English
Me?

3️⃣ Mää meen itkee pihalle.

Puhekieli

  • mää = minä (I)
  • meen = menen (go)
  • itkee = itkemään (to cry) (spoken form)
  • pihalle = outside / into the yard

English
I go outside to cry.

4️⃣ Soitan 112.

Puhekieli

  • soitan = I call
  • 112 = the emergency number

English
I call 112.

5️⃣ Mitä sä sanot sinne?

Puhekieli

  • sä = sinä (you)
  • sanot = say
  • sinne = there / to them

English
What do you say to them?

6️⃣ Moi.

Puhekieli

  • moi = hi / hello

English
Hi.

7️⃣ Te ootte harjotellu.

Puhekieli

  • ootte = olette (are)
  • harjotellu = harjoitelleet (have practiced)

8️⃣ Muistappa uuestaan, mitä sanotaan?

Puhekieli

  • muistappa = muista (remember) +pa (to express important of the action)
  • uuestaan = uudestaan (again)
  • mitä = what
  • sanotaan = do we say

English

9️⃣ Moi.

Puhekieli

  • moi = hi / hello
