In Part 1 we covered the core noun types. In Part 2 we covered the stem-change types you must learn by heart. This part covers the remaining types — some are small groups, some are very specific, but they all appear in real Finnish.
Type 12 — -EN / -EL / -ER Sanat (Words Ending in -EN, -EL, or -ER)
Ending: -en, -el, or -er
Examples: jäsen (member), askel (step), manner (continent), kyynel (tear)
The stem adds an -e- after the final consonant. In some words both single -e and double -ee are accepted.
Key facts:
- Stem: add -e- after the final consonant (jäsen → jäsene-, askel → askele-, manner → mantere-)
- Partitive: add -ta/-tä directly to the dictionary form → jäsentä, askelta, mannerta
- KPT: possible if the word has a KPT-eligible consonant — then the genitive stem is strong
| Form | jäsen | askel | manner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | jäsen | askel | manner |
| Stem | jäsene- | askele- | mantere- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | jäsenen | askelen | mantereen |
| Partitiivi | jäsentä | askelta | mannerta |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | jäsenessä | askelessa | mantereessa |
| Illatiivi | jäseneen | askeleen | mantereeseen |
Common words in this type: jäsen, askel, manner, kyynel,
Type 13 — -TAR / -TÄR Sanat (Words Ending in -TAR or -TÄR)
Ending: -tar, -tär
Examples: tytär (daughter), kuningatar (queen), jumalatar (goddess)
An old feminine suffix. The stem doubles the consonant before -tar/-tär and adds -e-.
Key facts:
- Stem: -tar/-tär → -ttare-/-ttäre- (tytär → tyttäre-, kuningatar → kuningattare-)
- Partitive: add -ta/-tä directly to the dictionary form → tytärtä, kuningatarta
- KPT: weak → strong in the stem
| Form | tytär | kuningatar |
|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | tytär | kuningatar |
| Stem | tyttäre- | kuningattare- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | tyttären | kuningattaren |
| Partitiivi | tytärtä | kuningatarta |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | tyttäressä | kuningattaressa |
| Illatiivi | tyttäreen | kuningattareen |
Note: -tär as a feminine suffix is disappearing in modern Finnish. Gender-neutral forms are preferred (e.g. näyttelijä instead of näyttelijätär). But tytär and kuningatar are still very much in use.
Common words in this type: tytär, kuningatar, jumalatar
Type 14 — -UUS / -YYS Sanat (Words Ending in -UUS or -YYS)
Ending: -uus, -yys (a long vowel + s)
Examples: rakkaus (love), kauneus (beauty), ystävyys (friendship), vapaus (freedom)
These words usually express a quality or abstract concept — think of them as the Finnish equivalent of English ”-ness” or ”-ship”. They are almost always derived from another word.
ystävä (friend) → ystävyys (friendship)
kaunis (beautiful) → kauneus (beauty)
Key facts:
- Stem: -uus/-yys → -uude-/-yyde- (rakkaus → rakkaude-, ystävyys → ystävyyde-)
- Partitive: replace -us/-ys with -ut/-yt, then add -ta/-tä → rakkautta, ystävyyttä
- Illative: replace -us/-ys with -ute-/-yte-, double the vowel, add -n → rakkauteen, ystävyyteen
- No KPT
| Form | rakkaus | kauneus | ystävyys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | rakkaus | kauneus | ystävyys |
| Stem | rakkaude- | kauneude- | ystävyyde- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | rakkauden | kauneuden | ystävyyden |
| Partitiivi | rakkautta | kauneutta | ystävyyttä |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | rakkaudessa | kauneudessa | ystävyydessä |
| Illatiivi | rakkauteen | kauneuteen | ystävyyteen |
Important: don’t confuse these with -us/-os words from Part 2. Vastaus (answer) → vastaukse- (-kse stem). But rakkaus (love) → rakkaude- (-de stem). The difference: -uus/-yys words follow the old -si pattern, not the -kse pattern.
Common words in this type: rakkaus, kauneus, ystävyys, vapaus, mahdollisuus, ongellisuus, kirjallisuus, uutuus
Type 15 — -UT / -YT Sanat (Words Ending in -UT or -YT)
Ending: -ut, -yt — but not derived from verbs (those are NUT-participles, covered separately)
Examples: olut (beer), kevyt (light), lyhyt (short), ohut (thin)
A small but useful group — mostly adjectives. The stem simply replaces the final -t with -e-.
Key facts:
- Stem: replace -t with -e- (kevyt → kevye-, olut → olue-)
- Partitive: add -ta/-tä directly to the dictionary form → kevyttä, olutta
- No KPT
| Form | kevyt | olut | lyhyt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | kevyt | olut | lyhyt |
| Stem | kevye- | olue- | lyhye- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | kevyen | oluen | lyhyen |
| Partitiivi | kevyttä | olutta | lyhyttä |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | kevyessä | oluessa | lyhyessä |
| Illatiivi | kevyeen | olueen | lyhyeen |
Common words in this type: kevyt, olut, lyhyt, ohut
Type 16 — -NUT / -NYT / -LUT / -LYT Sanat (Participle Adjectives)
Ending: -nut, -nyt, -lut, -lyt, -sut, -syt, -rut
Examples: väsynyt (tired), kuollut (dead), kyllästynyt (bored), huvittunut (amused)
These are NUT-participle forms used as adjectives. They describe a state resulting from an action — väsynyt means ”having become tired” = tired.
Key facts:
- Stem: replace -nut/-nyt with -nee-, -lut/-lyt with -lee- (väsynyt → väsynee-, kuollut → kuollee-)
- Partitive: add -ta/-tä directly to the dictionary form → väsynyttä, kuollutta
- No KPT
| Form | väsynyt | kuollut | kyllästynyt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | väsynyt | kuollut | kyllästynyt |
| Stem | väsynee- | kuollee- | kyllästynee- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | väsyneen | kuolleen | kyllästyneen |
| Partitiivi | väsynyttä | kuollutta | kyllästynyttä |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | väsyneessä | kuolleessa | kyllästyneessä |
| Illatiivi | väsyneeseen | kuolleeseen | kyllästyneeseen |
Why this matters: these forms appear constantly in everyday Finnish — väsynyt ihminen (a tired person), kuollut kieli (a dead language). They also replace relative clauses: Suomessa asunut nainen = Nainen, joka on asunut Suomessa (A woman who has lived in Finland).
Common words in this type: väsynyt, kuollut, kyllästynyt, huvittunut, tottunut, särkynyt, opiskellut
Type 17 — Loanwords Ending in a Consonant
Ending: a consonant (not a Finnish ending)
Examples: maraton (marathon), stadion (stadium), William, Facebook
Finnish words don’t naturally end in consonants. When foreign words are borrowed, an -i- is added to the stem before case endings.
Key facts:
- Stem: add -i- after the final consonant (maraton → maratoni-, stadion → stadioni-)
- Partitive: add -a/-ä → maratonia, stadionia
- Genetiivi: add -n → maratonin, stadionin
- No KPT
| Form | maraton | stadion |
|---|---|---|
| Dictionary | maraton | stadion |
| Stem | maratoni- | stadioni- |
| Genetiivi (-n) | maratonin | stadionin |
| Partitiivi | maratonia | stadionia |
| Inessiivi (-ssa) | maratonissa | stadionissa |
| Illatiivi | maratoniin | stadioniin |
Common words in this type: maraton, stadion, plus proper names and brand names (Facebook, McDonald’s)
