The Finnish Defence Forces just changed one of their oldest rules.
From the beginning of July 2026, men in the military are also allowed to have long hair. The same hair guidelines that currently apply to women will now apply to everyone — long hair is permitted, but it must be tied up.
The change is part of a broader update to the general service regulations.

A quick note on Finnish military service
Finland has mandatory military service (asevelvollisuus) for men. All Finnish
male citizens must complete it — typically 6 to 12 months, depending on the role.
Women can volunteer.
This means the Finnish Defence Forces (puolustusvoimat) are a normal part of
life that most Finnish men have experienced. When Finns talk about armeija,
everyone knows what it means — and what it feels like.
The rules and regulations (ohjesäännöt) that govern military life are updated
from time to time. This hair guideline change is one such update.
