What Is the TAVA-partisiippi?

In the previous post about VA-partisiippi, we looked at how to describe the person doing something.

The TAVA-partisiippi works differently. It describes the object — the thing being done, the thing that needs to be done, or the thing that should be done.

pakattava matkalaukku — the suitcase that needs to be packed

Same situation. Different focus. Different participle.

The Three Meanings

This is what makes TAVA-partisiippi so useful — and slightly tricky. It can mean three different things depending on context:

1. Something being done (or about to be done)

illalla esitettävä näytelmä — the play being performed this evening

2. Something that can be done

torilla myytävät hedelmät — the fruit that can be bought at the market

3. Something that must / should be done

luettava kirja — the book that must be read / the required reading

The same form, three possible readings. Context usually makes it clear which one is meant.

How to Form It

The ending is -tava / -tävä or -ttava / -ttävä, depending on the verb type.

Verb Type 1

Take the minä-form, remove -n, and add -ttava / -ttävä.

If the stem ends in -a / -ä, change it to -e first.

Verb Types 2 + 3

Take the infinitive stem (remove -da/-dä for type 2, remove -la/-na/-ta/-ra for type 3) and add -tava / -tävä.

Verb Types 4, 5 + 6

Take the infinitive stem (remove -ta/-tä) and add -ttava / -ttävä.

Word Order: Same Rule as Before

The TAVA-partisiippi also sits before the main noun, with its modifiers in front of it:

[pronoun / number] + [place/time] + [object] + partisiippi + adjective + main noun

Notice what happens with word order when you convert a joka-clause to a participle phrase: the verb and its object/place swap sides.

Joka-lause: iso matkalaukku, joka pakataan illalla

Partisiippi: illalla pakattava iso matkalaukku

The participle moves to sit right in front of the main noun. The place or time moves in front of the participle. It looks like the arrows cross — and they do.

Three Uses in More Detail

1. As a Participle (describing what’s happening)

Torilla myytävät hedelmät ovat yleensä erittäin tuoreita.

=The fruit being sold at the market is usually very fresh.

Illalla esitettävä näytelmä alkaa kello 19.

=The play being performed this evening starts at 7 PM.

Remontoitavassa asunnossa on vesikatko tänään.

=There is a water cut in the apartment being renovated today.

2. As a Necessity: G + on + TAVA = G + täytyy

This is one of the most useful patterns at B1 level.

Teidän on pakattava matkalaukku. = Teidän täytyy pakata matkalaukku. You need to pack the suitcase.

Minun on tehtävä tämä tänään. = Minun täytyy tehdä tämä tänään. I have to do this today.

Sinun on luettava tämä kirja. = Sinun täytyy lukea tämä kirja. You need to read this book.

3. With a ”Zero Person”: objekti / aika / paikka + on + TAVA

When there is no specific subject, the TAVA-partisiippi can express that something needs to be done in general.

Koko asunto on siivottava. = The whole apartment needs to be cleaned.

Lomake on täytettävä englanniksi. =The form must be filled in in English.

Liput on ostettava etukäteen. =The tickets must be bought in advance.

This pattern appears all the time in official texts, signs, and instructions.

Fixed Expressions Worth Knowing

Some very common everyday phrases use the TAVA-partisiippi. You’ll hear and see these constantly:

Onko teillä kysyttävää? — Do you have any questions?

Minulla on paljon kerrottavaa. — I have a lot to tell.

Tuo jotain juotavaa! — Bring something to drink!

Haluan jotain syötävää. — I want something to eat.

Onko täällä mitään luettavaa? — Is there anything to read here?

Annalla on aina paljon sanottavaa. — Anna always has a lot to say.

These sound perfectly natural. They’re worth learning as whole phrases.

Two More Patterns: Tehtävissä and Tehtävänä

The TAVA-partisiippi also appears in two other constructions that have specific meanings.

Olla tehtävissä (plural inessive only) — can be done / is possible

Auto on korjattavissa. — The car can be repaired.

Rakkaus ei ole mitattavissa rahalla. — Love cannot be measured by money.

Esimies ei ole tänään tavoitettavissa. — The manager cannot be reached today.

Olla tehtävänä (singular essessive only) — is currently being done

Auto on korjattavana. — The car is being repaired (right now).

Pyykit ovat pestävänä. — The laundry is being washed.

Viedä tehtäväksi (translative) — to be taken to get done

Auto viedään korjattavaksi. — The car is taken to be repaired.

Quick Summary

✅ TAVA-partisiippi describes the object — the thing being acted on

✅ It can mean: something being done, something that can be done, or something that must be done

✅ Formed from the verb stem + -tava / -tävä or -ttava / -ttävä (depending on verb type)

✅ Comes before the main noun, just like VA-partisiippi

✅ G + on + TAVA = must / has to (very common at B1 level)

✅ objekti + on + TAVA = needs to be done (common in instructions and signs)
